You might think that "anime" started with the first serialized TV shows in the 1960s, but Japan had been making animation long before this, in the form of short films. This article aims to give a tour through the history and evolution of early Japanese animation that led to the serialized shows of the 1960s that eventually led to where we are today. At present, there are over 200 early Japanese animations that have survived and are easily viewable. Here, 44 stand-out works in the chronological evolution of early animation are highlighted for you to check out. All animations listed here can be found online, with English subtitles when needed!

Cutout animation is a form of stop-motion animation usually made with paper or fabric cutouts. The technique was especially popular in Japanese animation before 1934 because cel animation used to be too expensive. Therefore pioneers of anime such as Noburou Oofuji and Yasuji Murata often used cutouts. Silhouette animation is considered a subgenre with its history going back to shadow plays. It is included in a separate stack.

Collage animation is closely related:

These stacks are meant for cataloguing every stop-motion animation on Myanimelist. The list is the result of research by the Stop-Motion Animation Appreciation Society:

https://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=16200

Stop-motion is a form of animation in which objects are manipulated little by little while each frame is shot separately. Puppet animation is the most common, but before 1935 cutout animation was also very common. Among other types are claymation, pixilation (now removed from the database), object and model animation. In this list also works using sand, charcoal or paint are included, since in the form they've been accepted to MAL, they also include gradual manipulation and shot by shot filming.

This is the interest stack version of this AWCc listing (https://myanimelist.net/forum/?goto=post&topicid=1479639&id=58843764) to make it easier to see what I've finished. It was made for my own convenience and is public for your convenience.

There have been some database changes that affect the listing. The ones I have noticed include title and type.

The listing was last updated Sep 16, 2023 11:09 PM as of this stack's publishing.
