You might think that "anime" started with the first serialized TV shows in the 1960s, but Japan had been making animation long before this, in the form of short films. This article aims to give a tour through the history and evolution of early Japanese animation that led to the serialized shows of the 1960s that eventually led to where we are today. At present, there are over 200 early Japanese animations that have survived and are easily viewable. Here, 44 stand-out works in the chronological evolution of early animation are highlighted for you to check out. All animations listed here can be found online, with English subtitles when needed!

Before experimental shorts were referred to as "Avant Garde" MAL called this genre "dementia", named after the mental disorder, but because these anime are generally poorly animated and have no story, characters, or substance I like to call them "demenshits". This is a selection of these types of anime if you feel inclined enough to become enlightened to the world of demenshits. Some of these may feature flashing lights and/or obscene imagery so watch at your own risk.

No crap like Sayuri or flashing "dEeP" trash like Aki no Puzzle. Here you got what you've come for: nonsense, but the GOOD kind of nonsense. Detach your brain and enjoy. Most of it is rated PG-13 or lower so don't worry about getting stuff you shouldn't see in your eyes.

Requisites for addition:
Must be 45 minutes or less.
Must have avant-garde genre tag.
I must have rated it 7 or higher. Not compulsory though, if a short has the other requirements it might be here despite the rating I gave.
Flashing lights must be kept to a minimum.
Little to no explicit sexual content. Nudity is allowed only if it's not in a sexual context.
Little to no screamers nor sudden volume changes or ear-screeching sounds.
Of course I must have watched it entirely.

Side note: F for my sanity in making this stack, I have been watching some horrible stuff among the few enjoyable ones. Good grief.

These stacks are meant for cataloguing every stop-motion animation on Myanimelist. The list is the result of research by the Stop-Motion Animation Appreciation Society:

https://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=16200

Stop-motion is a form of animation in which objects are manipulated little by little while each frame is shot separately. Puppet animation is the most common, but before 1935 cutout animation was also very common. Among other types are claymation, pixilation (now removed from the database), object and model animation. In this list also works using sand, charcoal or paint are included, since in the form they've been accepted to MAL, they also include gradual manipulation and shot by shot filming.
