Synopsis

An stop-motion puppet animation adaptation of The Ugly Duckling Hans Christian Andersen story.

Background

It had a limited release in 1968 and won several awards that year such as the prestigious Mainichi Film Nobuo Ofuji Award. On August 1, 1970 it had more nationwide release as a part of the Toho Champion Matsuri where several films are shown back to back for children at a discounted price over school holidays. As such, Minikui Ahiru no Ko was quadruple billed with Gezora, Ganime, Kameeba: Kessen! Nankai no Daikaijuu (Space Amoeba in the US release), Kyojin no Hoshi: Shukumei no Taiketsu, and Attack No.1: Namida no Kaiten Receive.

Mixed Feelings
It's a silly little stop motion that has no restriction to any watchers out there. 19 mins of swans (i think so), random villain which is a fat chicken, some humans, little chicks, cartoony crayon-feeling backgrounds which are quite adorable. Nevertheless, the soundtrack / background music was wolly to sensation. Despite that, the fat chicken kinda ruined it, it was blasting on my ears when it was chuckling like a goddamn nugget-looking train horn. I don't get how is this award-winning, maybe an award for the best story that is not storying. No idea what's it talking about since the only version I can find ...
