Violet Evergarden

The Great War finally came to an end after four long years of conflict; fractured in two, the continent of Telesis slowly began to flourish once again. Caught up in the bloodshed was Violet Evergarden, a young girl raised for the sole purpose of decimating enemy lines. Hospitalized and maimed in a bloody skirmish during the War's final leg, she was left with only words from the person she held dearest, but with no understanding of their meaning.

Recovering from her wounds, Violet starts a new life working at CH Postal Services after a falling out with her new intended guardian family. There, she witnesses by pure chance the work of an "Auto Memory Doll," amanuenses that transcribe people's thoughts and feelings into words on paper. Moved by the notion, Violet begins work as an Auto Memory Doll, a trade that will take her on an adventure, one that will reshape the lives of her clients and hopefully lead to self-discovery.

Violet Evergarden is a beautifully animated and emotionally touching anime series produced by Kyoto Animation. The story follows Violet, a former soldier who becomes an Auto Memory Doll — a ghostwriter who helps people express their feelings in letters. As she takes on various writing assignments, Violet gradually learns to understand human emotions and the meaning of the words "I love you," spoken to her by her beloved Major Gilbert before they were separated in the war.

The series combines stunning visuals, a moving soundtrack, and heartfelt character development. It’s a story about healing, personal growth, and discovering what it means to feel. Violet Evergarden is ... perfect for anyone who enjoys a deeply emotional and beautifully crafted story.

Mixed Feelings

Felt like the writers were asleep for the first nine episodes, woke up for episode 10, and then immediately went back to sleep. Nothing actually happens, and Violet often takes a backseat to the main character of each episode (which I get is intentional to make her seem more human by the end, but still). The series devolves into "melodrama of the week," with forced emotional manipulation and shallow character development. The portrayal of a post-war world is overly idealistic, with characters depicted as excessively kind, lacking the depth expected from such a setting. The series often resolves complex conflicts too easily, undermining the gravity ... of the situations and leaving viewers unsatisfied. Biggest issue? The Major. They did NOT need to make it a romantic relationship. Seriously. It’s a big, big, big, did I say big? MISTAKE. I cannot stress this enough. Can they please stop forcing this Major nonsense? He is not a good character.

I thought it would be impossible to ruin something that looks so perfect.
with this animation quality, those perfect character designs, the details like how could they fuck up the plot so bad that it's almost unwatchable like actually what an achievement! I was shocked when I first watched those half-baked side character quests that often don't even feel like a real series more like an episodical thing - but one that's not funny or creative enough to justify the format.
it's like the series can't even decide what the viewer is supposed to be invested in. maybe the main character? no she gets sidelined for random ... npcs that will never be important in the story again. ok maybe the other main characters? no they will be mentioned in an intersting introduction scene and there will be a fake premise about their importance in the plot, but it will never be relevant again.

i know that in the end violets "backstory" gets revealed and it's supposed to be dramatic but i somehow didn't feel anything because i just spent the show watching her getting sidelined and have this fake "character development" over random npcs.
the main cast doesn't feel like a real group of friends/people who work together like they're just somehow mixed together because they look cool, none of their interactions seem real and relatable or even as if they matter at all. would have been cool to see violet form some real relationships instead of bonding over writing letters for strangers i guess. also her love for gilbert was so incredibly cliché and uninteresting. it makes me really think that maybe violet isn't traumatized but just an incredibly boring character. but i know that the vn must have made a huge impression on the KyoAni staff so maybe I have to read it one day to see if something got lost in translation???

this might sounds cynical etc but as a former KyoAni fan, this show really disappointed me so much it's hard to explain.
despite it's great design and animation I would not recommend watching this because it's just a snooze fest srsly
