Mahoutsukai no Yome: Hoshi Matsu Hito

Story and character-wise, they're both very similar in ways and are slice of life genre but with supernatural or magic genre added in, which isn't very common for the SoL genre. While this is a anime recommendation, I am recommending both anime and manga as the Mahoutsukai no Yome anime only focuses on the backstory with 3 OVA. Both have a similar backstory where both the protagonist grew up in a similar way. Troubled and scared as a child because of seeing things normal people can't and because of that, they act differently in a way that scares other people to the point even their own families don't want anything to do with them. How each managed to cope with it is what sets them apart. The main story itself revolves around them as teenagers where they've manage to find a place they can call home and even meet people or creatures along the way who befriend them and they do their best to live their daily lives with those who understand them, while occasionally running into trouble. Mahoutsukai no Yome focuses on magic and fantasy elements while Natsume Yuujinchou focuses on supernatural with yokais and such. read more 

Chise and Sophie live in a beautiful, European-inspired fantasy world where magic can be used to make a living. The two girls at the beginning of the story have low opinions of themselves and latent magical abilities unbeknownst to either of them. They are taken in by Elias and Howl, the enigmatic and powerful wizards of their respective series who have more than a few secrets of their own. Through many experiences of helping others and guidance from their wizard mentors, Chise and Sophie learn to hone their magic, deepen their relationship with Elias and Howl, and gradually learn to accept and love themselves. 

Tthese two anime have a few things in common. First they are both manga adapted anime. Protagonist both have red hair that are rare at where they live. They both get taken in by other poeple as love interest.  

Both give off a similar feeling. Both deal with a girl trying to work and life in a world with magical creatures, 

They're prequels that are darker and more emotional than their main series. They also provide back-stories that explain the main character's actions, personalities, and motivations. 

Both shows feature lush wooded settungs prominently. The tone for each is light but bittersweet, and likely makes the viewer emotional... there's a supernatural element to them too giving them a similar feel. Recommend both 

Fantasy, magic, supernatural. A bit of romance. Similar feeling while watching. Nice-looking. Both definitely worth watching! 

If you like anime with theme of magic and slice of life then you might like these two. For instance, both have: - a lovely redhaired, green-eyed heroine who has the ability to see spirits heavily based on celtic folklore, like fairies. - a familiar pet which can talk and protects the heroine. - the hero aka a mysterious gentleman who is fond of the heroine. Personally I find Mahoutsukai better, because it develops the characters in a more meaningful way, but Hakushaku might be worth to try for those who like a little bit more of romance.  

The monster type elements floating around and being objects in Mahoutsukai no Yome, directly reminded me of Mushishi with that not everyone could see these elements/creatures. Both stories are quite different in terms of atmosphere and character progression though. But still wonderful on itself. 

Slice of life in a world of wonders. This is the premise for both anime, both presenting it's world with all its rules. And if you are wondering Mahoutsukai no Yome continues in a TV anime series, so you will get a lot from both anime in terms of world building.
