Hai to Gensou no Grimgar

Fear, survival, instinct. Thrown into a foreign land with nothing but hazy memories and the knowledge of their name, they can feel only these three emotions resonating deep within their souls. A group of strangers is given no other choice than to accept the only paying job in this game-like world—the role of a soldier in the Reserve Army—and eliminate anything that threatens the peace in their new world, Grimgar.

When all of the stronger candidates join together, those left behind must create a party together to survive: Manato, a charismatic leader and priest; Haruhiro, a nervous thief; Yume, a cheerful hunter; Shihoru, a shy mage; Moguzo, a kind warrior; and Ranta, a rowdy dark knight. Despite its resemblance to one, this is no game—there are no redos or respawns; it is kill or be killed.

It is now up to this ragtag group of unlikely fighters to survive together in a world where life and death are separated only by a fine line.

Captivating show. Slow burn.
It's slow because you will witness character relationship, world building, and progress in a realistic way.
None of the character is OP right from the start.
Grimgar is like a novel, but animated. You have chapters, intros, build-ups. It takes you through the steps of becoming more familiar with a foreign world. Grimgar's concept of isekai is self-respecting. Unlike modern isekais, where the author expect you to come in knowing the genre and "how things go". Grimgar is not a meta narrative, where everything is dumped onto you, or you can immediately expect something to pan out one way or the other ... that comes as baggage for isekais.
Characters are not overly cartoonish, childish, or easily categorized. In fact, we know very little about characters beyond our main cast. We are seeing the story through the eye of one individual.
Human conflicts develop naturally, and are reasonable.
Subtle details such as weapon maintenance, clothing repair, hay beds are some of the proof I needed to really confirm this show is meant to be taken as a saga. A planned out story that wants to tell a journey. Not just another cash grab.

Grimgar's story has a "beginning of an epic" atmosphere to it. A legend is being told, with missing pieces. A folklore.

Mixed Feelings

I will admit, I fell for this one because of the art style, which is gorgeous. And if it were an art book, I would definitely recommend it. But it was not an art book, and you need more than pretty pictures to make a good anime.

The story was very simple, but it lacked conviction. I think they humanized the enemies a bit much with cute little eyecatches of baby goblins being adorable, or monsters chilling out at home minding their own business when they are suddenly attacked by our main characters who need to kill them for...money. I was not convinced that the characters ... in the show were even justified in fighting or killing the enemies, and often found myself rooting against them.

The show also felt like it dragged on a lot. Many of the episodes involved discussing the characters' feelings for the billionth time, and awkward, overly-emotional music was a frequent occurrence.

It was also sortof cringe about the fanservice.

Overall, I did not enjoy watching this anime, and the only thing that saved it in my opinion was the art style.

First of all, it's really weak as an anime.
Boring dialogues, meaningless conversations, and poor environment design are all points that discourage you throughout the anime.
But most importantly, the wrong choice of voice actor for the main character. The main character, Haruhiro, is a young boy with an average physique, while the voice chosen for him is a relatively mature voice suitable for young people with a larger physique and older age. This inappropriate choice makes it impossible for you to feel a connection with the main character throughout the anime, and the inconsistency of this voice with the character bothers you.
Perhaps if this were not ... the case and a voice actor suitable for the character's appearance was chosen, it could cover the other weaknesses that I mentioned at the beginning, but unfortunately it was not.
Apart from these issues, the fact that the story had no beginning and end anchor was also annoying. Compared to anime like Sword Art Online and Log Horizon, this anime is really weak, with annoying characters and a boring story.
