Oh man, what could've been.
Persona 2: Innocent Sin is one of my favorite video games ever, and its companion, Eternal Punishment, isn't far behind. Its story is top notch, its characters lovable, and its gameplay not bogged down with dating sim elements.
This 6 minute video was included in the box of the Japanese release of Eternal Punishment. It's not hard to find on youtube either. It plays out like a trailer for an anime adaptation of the duology. The central mysteries and antagonists are established, all the important characters get shown, and it ends on a cliffhanger, so as far as trailers go, everything
...
checks out.
What doesn't check out is the aftermath.
With the success of Persona 3 and 4 and whatnot, Atlus has kind of left Persona 2 in the dark. Despite Persona 3 and 4 getting animes and movies, nothing ever became of this Persona 2 anime.
With only a trailer, there's a lot of space to think about what could've been. Imagine a 12-episode OVA, 6 to Innocent Sin and 6 to Eternal Punishment. That would've been the coolest shit.
There are some caveats. The animation quality of this trailer was pretty poor and the art was pretty generic 90's fare, and the whole thing looked almost campy. Still, I would have put this all aside if Atlus made an actual product.
So Persona 2's fate is a lot like Cross Road. If you haven't seen Cross Road, it's only 2 minutes long, so you might as well go see it right now. Anyways, both Persona 2: Another Self and Cross Road are incredibly promising trailers for concepts that will almost surely never be expanded on and made into animes. Promising roads that lead to dead ends, so the only thing we can do is turn around and seek more roads.
