Anime collected in this stack have stories which focus on the struggles of maintaining, repairing, or building family bonds. These relationships should be between the main characters and must be non-romantic in nature.

Series which focus primarily on taking care of infants to pre-teen children will not be included in this stack; please use the Childcare theme to find these stories. However, if the childcare component is only one relationship of multiple in the family, then these anime will also be added here.

Series that highlight the slice of life aspect of a family and explore the relationships within the family

Anime series produced before 2000s with a fair amount of scenes depicting Japanese cities in the '80s or'90s providing a remarkable nostalgic feeling, both cities centre or especially suburbs and residential areas.

Ending themes normally don't get the love they deserve, so this a list that consists of a variety of genres, from jazz to rap, but each of them has this strong melodic effect that will surely make you either sing, dance or, at the very least, headbanging you at the rhythm of the song.

After Mahoutsukai Sally - the first animated series adapted from a manga that was targeting the "shoujo" demographic (young female audience) - there have been many more works that were targeted to this new market following the initial success of "Mahoutsukai Sally"

This list attempts to collect some of the most important of those works, starting from the beginning. This is done so that people who are interested in or new to the history of "Shoujo" anime can gain atleast some kind of understanding of the history and the development throughout the years.

I will try to write my short spoiler free review/thoughts for each of the entries on this list to explain further why I think the entry is important as far as the history of "shoujo" anime is concerned.

In short these are the series that I think everyone who is interested in shoujo anime, the history of shoujo anime or history of girls entertainment in Japan in general when it comes to animation, should be atleast aware of.

Note: The term "shoujo" used in this list is being used to refer girls entertainment in general and not just adaptations from shoujo manga.

This is a compilation of anime adapted from manga that ran in Ribon magazine. Sequels aren't counted, but I do have some entries where it's just a couple of OVAs, where there are two entries.

This is the second part of a collection of articles where I aim to explore the evolution of anime related music. This part of the list attempts to collect a list of most iconic performances on the "New Age" of anime music.

The term "New Age" used in this list refers to a phase after the "Anime Songs" phase. During this phase there started being more "tie-up songs" that that essentially were "tied" to the animated series in order to gain more exposure and market reach to the song itself. This was an interesting approach for many as it opened a new model on how to sell these products to the market.

The theme songs essentially dropped that strong connection to the series demonstrated by their lyrics and the emotion invoked by the song related to the series. Instead of that the song and the lyrics talk about the series or the characters with an indirect manner forming a supposed link between the performance and the series in question.

The supposed link consists of "the spirit" of the performance which refers to the indirect nature of the performance in relation to the series itself, and "the product" which refers to the stand alone nature of the performance itself as observed without the supposed connection to the initial series. The root of "the spirit" can be said originating from the earlier phase.

These types of theme songs were more common and popular after 1980s. The defining moment that can be said had influence on changing the theme songs away from this model is the popularity of the series "Urusei Yatsura" and how it used to promote a several "tie-up" songs that in contrast to "Anime Songs" by their nature don't necessarily have anything to do with the series, story or the characters as far as the direct approach goes.

I will write my thoughts on each of the entries on this list to further explain why I think the series and the theme songs included as a combined package have attained "iconic" status when it comes to the scene of "New Age" anime music in contrast to the "Anime Songs". I will also give a score related on how well "the spirit" and the "product" perform parallel to each other while complimenting the series as a whole. The series are ordered based on that score.

The term "iconic" in this list is defined by the popularity and how deeply established the spirit and the elements of the performance relating to the spirit establishing the product are in addition of them being supposedly intertwined with the series as a whole experience.

Shoujo anime that may contain body horror, cosmic horror and various horror elements, serious topics such as rape and suicide. They might use different kind of storytellings most of other shoujo anime doesn't and more likely to have philosophy. Often well developed main characters, old and completed series.

Cute and wholesome entertainment without jarring pantsu shots and other types of weird fan service.

I made this stack specifically for shows that are earnest and wholesome, and doesn't try to rely on appealing to "fanboys/fangirls" with vulgarity and/or "sex appeal", because I have always thought it was such a jarring addition to wholesome and comfy shows.

Main-main MC unless there are 2 or more who equally share the spotlight. Will not add (yet) those I'm not certain of

I made this list because I wanted to start watching more classic anime. In order to make this list, I needed to set my own parameters. For simplicity, I chose 1980 and 2001. After browsing through MAL by season from 1980-2001, these are the ones that looked fun. Some are well known, others have a specific genre tag that I usually enjoy. Therefore, this list contains a variety of genres: mahou-shojo, idol, romance, etc.

PG-rated (for teenagers who are 10 years old onwards) magical girl anime

Those shoujo animes that we would watch after coming back from school. Plotlines are mainly about daily slice of life mixed with a bit fantasy, romance, family and friends. No complicated intrigue no tricky plot twist; just warm and funny.
