Similar setting (cyberpunk future, cybernetically enhanced law enforcement officers, etc) however GitS is less action oriented and much more philosophical than ASEM.

The only reason I say these two are similar is due to the fact of their strikingly similar art/visual style. If you like the look of Final Fantasy, which to me seems like an ingame video, then Appleseed Ex Machina has the same aspects.

Both these anime revolve around a type of "utopia" in which people live in, which outside the boundaries of the city, it is inhabitable by humans. Both also have a type of robot or life form which are required to help society run.
