Both have not only the same theme of the effect of war on children, but the general atmosphere of the playfulness of children and their families. While Those left Behind is usually taken to be the more popular of the two, Rail of the Star talks about other things in family relationships and seems to expand more the characters of not just the main lead girl but others. I think the story of Rail of The Star is more unique, but I liked both anyway and if you saw one, you should definitely see the other.

Same time during WWII in Japan and about how families were affected are very similar.

A little older than Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni, but it also shows time before the bombing and both surround a young girl to adulthood with a family. In Ushiro, she lived in Tokyo and the bombing she faced was a napalm bomb, while Katasumi was the bomb falling on Hiroshima. I thank inim for the correction of this second line.

Shouwa Monogatari and the first half of Ushiro no Shoumen Daare are both slice of life stories about the lives of a working-class family set in Tokyo in the past (UnSD takes place in the 1940s, SM is set in 1964).

Ushiro no Shoumen Daare - Children facing the devastation, death, and loss as a result of USA firebombing Tokyo during WWII.

Both movies are about a woman looking back at events that happened when they were a child.

Children coping with the ravages of war. Ushiro no Shoumen Daare is decidedly more realistic but The Boy Who Saw the Wind isn't total fantasy in its depiction of events and emotions. Both are excellent.
