Organic animation with a hint of depression, existentialism, cynicism, semi-realistic artstyle, fear/ embrace of technology after the economic bubble burst of Japan in 80s.   A similar early-90s to early-10s visual aesthetic; based on desaturated and/or beigeish palettes, grounded character designs, and a psychological tone.   anime that has a dark or romantic "goth" feeling to it     Includes black or dark-colored sailor uniforms. (serafuku/sailor fuku)   I’m using the term “horror” very loosely so anything that is disturbing/creepy or aims to be counts.     List of dark or depressive anime from the 2000s.   late 90's, early 2000's anime that just give me the same vibe. Desaturated colors, realistic art style, very experimental and amazing stories.   (mostly) shoujo anime that has an underlying dark, gloomy, and gothic feel to it. recurring imagery/motifs concerning the contrast between beauty and the grotesque, messed up power dynamics, death, religion, forbidden romance, wanting to change one's fate, and subversions of gender and/or sexuality.  The Early 2000's brought onto the anime scene a stage experimentation where dark, psychological and philosophical themes such as the human condition, existentialism, nihilism and isolation where explored on front and center, such themes are developed in a way which they question and explore the ideals and morals of the characters and society itself. They have heavy world building, with mostly an unique art style and muted colors and symbolic imagery that complement their themes, its uniqueness is highlighted with the low-resolution quality that was distributed on the early days of the anime community on the internet remarking the era it composed, such works are considered Avant Garde. |
