Hoshi no Koe

The Animation Kobe (アニメーション神戸) was an event established by Kobe in 1996 to promote anime and other visual media. The Animation Kobe Awards (アニメーション神戸賞) were given annually until 2015 by Kobe and the Organizing Committee to creators and creations.

The packaged media distributed in Japan from September of the previous year to August of the event year become candidates. The candidates are selected not only from Japan but also from other countries. However, the committee sees more importance in a point of view promoting young creators of Japan.

Anime that either employ a cyberpunk style or contain elements of it, and are dark, moody, grimy and/or nihilistic.

short anime with less than the standard 12 episodes, including some movies under an hour long and a select few ONA projects

anime heavily leaning on atmosphere, often set in sad scenarios but not overly dramatic

The mecha genre is specific to the anime medium, for the reason that what once started from an interesting concept, over the decades and the various artistic interpretations it had gone through, did managed to reach it's full development and thematic recognition.

It's origin can be traced way back to the end of World War 2, and the notion of the general populace at the time, that the technological breakthroughs, and their further usage to help and safeguard mankind are the way that we should develop as a species, so that's when the bipedal metal giants were born - a figures with humane limbs and features, that are controlled by a person and which allows them to wield this overwhelming power in service of a greater good.

In this interest stack, I've presented the ways in this genre had changed, and the specific shows which had major impact upon the development of the mecha as a concept, and the ways it had branched out of the established norm for this genre exploring a broad spectrum of themes. The order of the shows is in chronological order, since that way the slight alterations and changes can be presented in more simple and efficient manner.

This is a part of a series of stacks that are about artistic tendencies in anime (and that border the fine line between sophisticated and pretentious).

Movies and shows with less than usual runtime or number of episodes.

This stack includes anime with narration and dialogues denoting particular focus on romanticism, nostalgia drama and solitude, as well an art style with a clear and recurrent depiction of attractive and gorgeous visual elements, including for instance scenes with cherry trees in blossom, or creative and intense use of light for representing scenes like sunsets, starry nights and landscapes in general particularly recalling feeling of romanticism and nostalgia.

This list includes very unique and artsy anime that are around one episode in length, so anything between 20 to 50 minutes. So movies and really short stuff are excluded. Also compilations of multiple unrelated anime (ex: Genius Party) would also be here is each episode is in that timeframe.

This Month is most notable for airing the original Dragon Ball, Naruto: Shippuuden and the directorial debut of Satoshi Kon with Perfect Blue (premiered in August, but MAL logs it's theatrical February release so I'm keeping it here lol).

The OVA market dried up as straight to video releases became a thing of the past, which is unfortunate because a lot of interesting and unique anime were released in this format. The point of the list is to feature worthwhile OVAs that are more than just fanservice or shoddy extras for TV series. Sigh, due to the explicit content warning feature, I've excluded Mezzo Forte, but it would be on here otherwise. I should also probably make room for Yukikaze at some point.

GKIDS is an American film distributor based in New York with, according to the Los Angeles Times, a focus on "sophisticated, indie" animation. GKIDS releases critically acclaimed mostly hand-drawn, international films—such as the works of the independent Japanese anime studio Studio Ghibli—to North American audiences. GKIDS also distributes computer animated and stop-motion films in addition to hand-drawn ones, as well as American films by independent filmmakers. The name is said to be an acronym for "Guerrilla Kids International Distribution Syndicate".
