For an anime to be considered environmentalist, it must primarily communicate a message regarding the condition of nature; moreover, it should portray nature as suffering, whether from pollution, deforestation, ecosystem collapse, or similar crises, in a manner that resonates with the Japanese environmentalist movement.

Update: On 18.8.2024, after watching the third part of the @WooKong1 anime history documentary, I added a few anime titles that were discussed in its ecological section. Overall, I highly recommend the video. A not fully animated movie mention in the video Godzilla vs Hedorah (1971)

From 1977 to 1985, Sanrio produced movies through their Sanrio Films label. After A Journey Through Fairyland, Sanrio switched gears and started doing short films, OVAs, and TV shows based on their characters. In 2006, Sanrio announced they are again going to do feature-length films.

There's an all-new Unico manga to be released by Scholastic's Graphix imprint on August 6, 2024; it'll be their first manga publication. Unico: Awakening, a reimagining of Osamu Tezuka’s unicorn character, is a 224-page full color manga by Japanese illustration team Gurihiru—Chifuyu Sasaki (pencils, inks) and Naoko Kawano (coloring) and author Samuel Sattin.

From the synopsis and trailer, it looks like the story is closer to the 1981 Unico movie in this list. Chao (Katy) is just renamed as Chloe for Western audiences.

Osamu Tezuka was a Japanese manga artist, cartoonist, animator, and film producer. Additionally, he is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during Tezuka's formative years.

Tezuka began what was known as the manga revolution in Japan with his New Treasure Island published in 1947.
