Zankyou no Terror

Painted in red, the word "VON" is all that is left behind after a terrorist attack on a nuclear facility in Japan. The government is shattered by their inability to act, and the police are left frantically searching for ways to crack down the perpetrators. The public are clueless—until, six months later, a strange video makes its way onto the internet. In it, two teenage boys who identify themselves only as "Sphinx" directly challenge the police, threatening to cause destruction and mayhem across Tokyo. Unable to stop the mass panic quickly spreading through the city and desperate for any leads in their investigation, the police struggle to act effectively against these terrorists, with Detective Kenjirou Shibazaki caught in the middle of it all.

Zankyou no Terror tells the story of Nine and Twelve, the two boys behind the masked figures of Sphinx. They should not exist, yet they stand strong in a world of deception and secrets while they make the city fall around them, all in the hopes of burying their own tragic truth.

I’m terrible at writing reviews but I just have to for this one. Terror in Resonance was an anime that I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did, especially considering the fact that I don’t typically watch anime like this one. I usually watch animes that are brighter and don’t deal with such a heavy atmosphere and mood but I saw one clip of this anime and said “Screw it, let’s watch” and I'm so glad I did.

Let’s talk about the story first. As soon as I read the synopsis I was hooked. As a kid, I always enjoyed dystopian and dark books ... and I felt that that this anime would be like that and I was right! Nine and Twelve (yes that’s their names. Just adds to that dystopian feel) are just two teenage boys yet they are the ones behind some terrorist attacks in Japan. They have a reason for their actions but I won’t spoil that. Usually in anime like this, we would only see the police’s side of things but here we see it from Nine and Twelve’s perspective along with Lisa’s (a girl who coincidentally got entangled in their lives). The story kept me engaged because with each episode we get more and more information as to what happened in Nine and Twelve’s past and their motives for being terrorists. Also, I enjoyed all the symbolism with Oedipus and how they could relate to his life in some way.

Despite all this chaos, there are moments when the anime lets you breathe and have a moment of peace, especially with Twelve’s outgoing personality. Some scenes are so beautiful and leave such a big impression on you (ahem the bike scene, which made me feel so many emotions). It’s memorable and you *will* keep those moments close to your heart, especially when we go back to the chaos and dark side of things.

I got attached to the characters and I love them all very much. I would have loved to see more character development but considering it’s only 11 episodes it’s okay I guess. I’m gonna be honest but at first, I was really annoyed with Lisa because she just kept getting in the way and was really dumb at times but then she grew on me. She grew on me so much that I can’t imagine things without her. Because of her, we got some amazing scenes and we did see her change and grow as time went by. She also really helped Nine and Twelve grow and it was just really nice to see their interactions with each other.

Is this anime perfect? No. But is it very enjoyable and honestly its imperfections just add to the overall feel. This anime is truly beautiful and I would consider it Mappa’s hidden gem (Trust me I couldn’t believe that this was from Mappa).

My overall score is an 8/10.

Mixed Feelings

What truly separates a good anime from a great one is it’s ability to benefit from anime’s unique elements and ways of storytelling which separate the medium from traditional movies/series.
Terror in Resonance (Zankyō no Teroru) does not do these things, and expectedly, the anime turns into something very bland.
The story is not all that interesting, apart from the ending, which was pretty surprising to say the least.
The characters are also predictable and are there to serve the plot, without any developments really.

Terror in Resonance is just an incredibly average anime. If you are looking for something unique and unpredictable, you should ... not watch this anime.
If you don’t really care, go ahead.

Zankyou no Terror (A Parable About Kind Terrorists)

The overhyped and overly praised anime has been watched, so let’s get to the point.
This anime had potential, but it was skillfully wasted thanks to ridiculous logical flaws. The original idea was shoved aside and forgotten, leaving everyone oddly satisfied with the result.

Characters:
Our protagonists are two "Sphinxes" who had a rough experimental childhood and a girl whom these kind terrorists decided not to kill. Fun fact: no one dies from their terror attacks at all. There’s no character development, just sob stories about a tough and tragic past that no ... one really cares about.
The much-lauded thriller ends up being trash because the protagonists face off against a cardboard cutout instead of a charismatic detective with strong motivation to catch the terrorists.

Plot:
The absurdity is off the charts. The main heroine jumps onto a moving motorcycle from the fourth floor without a scratch. The not-so-bright but oh-so-kind Sphinxes can’t hack the airport monitors to warn about a planted bomb, so they march straight in instead.
Judging by their attacks, people definitely would have died, especially from the last one, which knocked out all the electricity in Japan.

Music:
The music is good, but there isn’t enough of it.

Animation:
The animation quality is excellent, with plenty of frames per second, but it doesn’t save the anime.

Final Thoughts:
The anime has its good moments, but the ratio of good to bad leans heavily toward garbage.
If you hate neglected character development, overused cardboard side characters, and mind-numbing stupidity that makes you want to end it all, do yourself a favor and don’t watch this.
