Both are made by Yoshiyuki Tomino and feel like 1980s anime even though they were made in the 2000s. They both have young genius pilot protagonists joining a small group opposing a nation simply because they were at the wrong place at the right time. Both anime also contain some nonsensical plot points which progress the story forward.

Both have similar plots where the main character starts off as a member of a one faction, but quickly defects to a freedom fighter/rebel group-type faction where he stays for the rest of the show. Both shows are also directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and share many of the quirks of his style. Dunbine is a much easier watch, as it is paced more evenly, while G-Reco is paced very quickly and requires the viewer's full attention.

Do you know my rollercoaster name in my amusement park? YOSHIYUKI TOMINO.

Both shows demand the viewer's full attention at all times, both sporting large casts of characters that constantly expand as the series goes on, and move through plot points relatively quickly after they are introduced. If you can handle the breakneck pacing, both series reward you with engaging drama based around the characters' experiences in the military and political conspiracies. Both shows also have great mecha designs and entertaining battles
