If you like old-fashioned anime comedies like Urusei Yatsura you may well also like Dr. Slump and Arale-chan. Both series were broadcast in the early 80s and have a number of voice actors in common.

The premises of both shows are similar: an eccentric genius (Senbei Norimaki/Kiteretsu) builds a silly robot that is capable of acting just like a human (Arale Norimaki/Korosuke), and slice-of-life hilarity ensues. Mami Koyama and Kazuko Sugiyama also play major characters on both shows (specifically, the same major character on separate occasions).

Mechakko Dotakon is, in many ways, Dr. Slump’s forgotten stepbrother. In addition to premiering on the same network (Fuji Television) during the same season (Spring 1981), both shows revolve around an eccentric inventor (Michiru Dan/Senbei Norimaki) building a powerful yet absent-minded robot child (Dotakon/Arale Norimaki). Unlike Dr. Slump, whose cast consists of characters of all ages, Dotakon’s main cast consists of children (and a dog) - adults are relegated to supporting or one-time characters. Because of this, it’s not nearly as “adult” as Dr. Slump.

I much prefer Dr. Slump than this Taruruuto-kun movie, as much as their comedy is similar. If someone liked the comedy of one, they might like the comedy of the others, although for me Taruruuto-kun wasn't as funny as Dr. Slump.

Both series have a similar sense of humor, especially how the villains in both series are goofy and hard to take seriously. Both shows also have sci-fi technology despite being set in an old-fashioned town. Wataru is a bit more focused on Action and Adventure while Dr. Slump is more focused on comedy, but both series give off a very similar tone to me.

The shows have similar characters and settings. In both shows there's: - An energetic, quirky purple-haired girl full of curiosity who stays in a small town/village - A funny, quirky father character - A girl whose family runs a cafe - A boy who's always wearing sunglasses - Parodies/references to other shows Both are fun non-serious shows to watch.
