Japan is popular to have honorable swordsmen, and they are evidently known as Samurai. Just as we’d love to explore the Japanese culture, we also tend to show more love towards Samurai anime shows.

These Samurai anime series have always been amazing at storytelling and depicting some insane action scenes. So, if you’re here looking for some of the best Samurai anime series of all time, we’ve got the perfect list waiting for you.

I love samurai anime not just because we have some cool actions (well, that’s one of the reasons), but they depict history in the most realistic way.

So, these are the Top 25 Samurai Anime that I think are really good and worth at least a single watch.

Avoided a bit of the really obvious ones (The Big 3 and Death Note) and some that were really similar to something already present on this list. These are anime I recommend you not miss out on in your lifetime.

Anime with an intriguing, immersive, rich, or otherwise memorable atmosphere. Usually a combination of artistic, imaginative visuals, distinctive music, a slowish pace, and cryptic, emotional, and/or philosophical dialogue. Atmospheric doesn't necessarily mean good, though.

If you are likely to watch an anime specifically because it predominantly features swords, blades, katanas, scimitars, or claymores in it, then this is the list for you!

This list is targeted to people who have little time to spend on watching anime but they already have watched the popular ones. Anime in this list have occult following but they are not well-known in the public. Hope you'll be joining these occult followings by enjoying some of the following anime.
Also, this list is a challenge of shorts so that you won't stop watching just from the first episode and be able to have a better understanding of the anime you are watching.

These are shows which are amazing, each in their own way, however they were never finished. The list doesn't include shows that new seasons have been announced like Spice & Wolf (thank God for the new season). The sooner the better, Japan!
EDIT: Spice & Wolf definitely worthed it but a 2nd season is necessary! Also, so many shows that needed another season were aired or announced like Black Butler and Dorohedoro, so i removed them from this list. Let's go, Japan! Make Haruhi happen!

If i hear about a Claymore sequel or remake, i' ll lose my mind! It doesn't seem like a dream anymore.

These anime have strong & dark depictions of suffering, mental illness, trauma violence, sex and various sociopolitical and economic problems in a grounded way and without sugarcoating it, although in fiction it is often impossible to completely avoid the distorting lense of epicness or melodrama when portraying reality.

When I say that these shows portray reality, I don't mean to say that they are necessarily based in material reality, as some are sci-fi or fantasy. What I mean, is that these shows portray the bleak and harrowing aspects of human condition without pulling any punches, and without romanticizing it (to some extent).

These shows often have a positive and hopeful overall message and/or ending sometimes, so I wouldn't call this a list of "depressing" shows. However, they have in common that they revolve around brutal and mature depictions of psychological, physical and spiritual pain of individuals and society, while also having a haunting and opressive feel to them.

Historical shows that doesn't have fantasy elements

I do this Interest Stack for those like me like samurai fights, wars and that show a little of japan history and the different periods covered in each anime, this list was also based on the animes that I watched, there are other works of this genre but I haven't seen them yet I cannot recommend them here.

A selection of shows that centralizes on the idea of evil, whether as a direct presence or a symbolic representation, that revels in themes of hostility, corruption, debauchery and death that ultimately, cause the grievous and tragic collapse of one's sense of humanity. Due to its dark nature, this list is unfiltered and therefore, may display lurid elements that are problematic. But if you're here to seek the thrills of violence and the spills of blood, then witness the dance of the Devil.

What is a manly anime? It may be hard to define them at first glance. Rather than a textbook definition, it's more of a specific "vibe". You can feel when you're watching one of them.

One might associate them with a specific artstyle, starring adult male characters with a muscular build and detailed facial features, and while that is definitely a common trend, it's not necessarily a requisite.

To me, a manly series is one where the characters represent the ideals of manhood. They have an unbreakable determination, they protect their loved ones and are willing to risk their own lives for what they believe in, to achieve their dreams, or for a better future. And while the majority are battle oriented, they might not even need to throw a punch to be considered manly, sometimes their strong will speaks for themselves.

These characteristics apply to many other series, but a manly anime just hits different. You look at them and think "that's what a man would do".

This is not a comprehensive list, but rather, a collection of the series I feel represent these ideals best and would recommend to those interested in this type of anime.
