"Elitist" has been a very generic and broad term to generalise many types of not-so-mainstream or "deep" anime, so this list is very diverse and it's criteria are not always clear cut and objective. Nonetheless I try to provide a proper explanation for why each entry is included. Generally speaking these are shows that fit one OR more of these adjectives: Experimental, Avant-Garde, Psychological, Philosophical, Obscure, Classic, Critically Acclaimed, Artsy, Old, etc...

Some shows here are not necessarily obscure or underground at all, but they are still here because they have been stereotyped as "elitist" by the community over time, due to their experimental or artsy nature. Similarly, some shows here are not necessarily artsy or experimental in nature, but their old/underwatched/obscure nature gives them a reason to be here. Not all aspects have to be checked to be included. Only one per franchise.

I have personally watched the great majority of the anime in this list, but there are a couple which I haven't. Still added them because of how strongly they are stereotyped as "elitist" or have fitting characteristics to be classified as such. I know my list still lacks many essential classics, I will continue to add and expand into this list as I watch those personally.

In 2012, The Asahi Shimbun announced the 104 TV anime that they considered to be the most representative and memorable of all TV anime between 1963 and 2012. It's a good starting point for exploring general TV anime history, and the shows are all worth giving a shot. The list was not ranked, and ordered by release date.

50 different series from 50 different years. While most of these are my favorites from year to year, I have included some I thought should get a bit more of a spotlight on. It actually took me a lot longer to put this list together than I thought it would, some years had a lot of good picks and it was hard to pick out either a favorite or one that should be highlighted.

Note there are a few years I have not seen a show from (a few years from the 70s) so I will add some from my PTW or that were impactful.

The most acclaimed anime series of all time, compiled from 57 lists. Last updated October 2022.

The lists come from many different sources, mostly blogs and forum polls, as well as a few lists made by critics, animators, and journalists. I used both old and new lists, and I avoided lists that focus on a single genre or a single decade.

The list is ranked by points. An anime receives points for each list it appears on. For polls, an anime receives points proportional to the number of votes, with weights adjusted to prevent individual polls from having too much influence. All anime in the top 100 appear on at least 5 lists.

Space: the final frontier. The ultimate aspiration for Humanity´s willingness to deal with the unknown (at least until a multiverse is confirmed). And who is Humanity´s best friend in such an endeavor? Spaceship is.

And thus, Spaceship is:
- Lost in space.
- Trying to leave Earth.
- Trying to return to Earth.
- Trying to go from A to B.
- Wandering aimlessly.
- Trying to go to where no man has gone before.

Or similar scenarios.

While doing so, Spaceship is also:
- Trying to survive.
- Facing adversities.
- Dealing with the unknown.
- Facing its enemies, foreign or domestic.

All in the name of whatever mission Spaceship might have.

Spaceship is love. Spaceship is life.

--o--

This stack might include entire franchises; since I do not want to bloat it with all of their elements, I will only include the first one or the most significant one and comment as needed.

Also I am intentionally censoring certain words because Facebook and Twitter traumatized me.

If you have suggestions for this stack, let me know.

This is a stack of the best Anime from the 1970s. In short order, this decade was known for Mecha, Literary, and a bit of Sports Anime. This decade is frequently seen seen as laying the framework for the coming decade. Very notably, the beginnings were planted of a genre that will go on to become very popular in the 1980s: Mecha.

Along with Mecha, there was a huge focus sci-fi, especially in space. Much of this type of anime would come from a studio known as, Sunrise. This studio came into being after Osamu Tezuka, the father of manga, left his own studio, Mushi Production to work on personal projects. Without him, Mushi Pro ran into financial problems, leading to its bankruptcy in 1973. Former employees formed two new companies out of the ashes of the old company: Madhouse and Sunrise, two of the most influential Anime Studios to date.

And while Mecha seemed to be appealing to boys (Shonen), some Shojo (girl anime) also became quiet popular during this time. Both leaning very heavily on merchandising with in some cases the help from Bandai. For television outside of Japan, many animation for kids was censored of anything seen as political or sexual.

Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata made a series of literary anime with Nippon Animation. Taking influence, literary and story-telling anime were made by many other studios. After leaving Nippon Animation, Miyazaki continued making popular anime, including Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. This anime was a movie installment of the anime series Lupin III which started a few years earlier, and now is a long running series that has spanned decades with varying success.

There were additionally, some sports anime sprinkled throughout the decade also, following the popularity of sports on TV in Japan.

And then there's The Belladonna of Sadness. It was a first look into the world of Avant Garde for many. No words can accurately describe the experience of the Anime.

And that is a quick walk through of the 1970s. I will be releasing a stack for the best anime of the 1980s next week, so stay tuned. :)

----
About List:
Anime is listed by a balance of popularity and score around time of release to give a more retro vibe, as opinions on anime seems to change notably over time, be it nostalgia or something else. Seems to be especially the case with Mecha Anime. But, regardless, the rating around the time is included for your own viewing.

----

For those looking for good anime from the 60s, I don't plan on making a stack for the 1960s as of yet, but here is what would likely be included:

Tiger Mask
Sasuke
Dororo
Star of the Giants
Muumin
Astro Boy
Puss-in-Boots (Nagagutsu wo Haita Neko)
Kamui the Ninja: Stories Other Than the Legend (Ninpuu Kamui Gaiden)
Attack No.1

This is the first part of a collection of articles where I aim to explore the evolution of anime related music. This part of the list attempts to collect a list of most iconic "Anime Songs".

The term "Anime Songs" used in this list refers to the theme songs that have a strong connection to the series demonstrated by their lyrics and the emotion invoked by the song related to the series. Essentially the song and the lyrics talk about the series or the characters in a direct manner forming a direct link between the performance and the series in question.

These types of theme songs were more common and popular before 1980s. The defining moment that can be said had influence on changing the theme songs away from this model is the popularity of the series "Urusei Yatsura" and how it used to promote a several "tie-up" songs that in contrast to "Anime Songs" by their nature don't necessarily have anything to do with the series, story or the characters.

I will write my thoughts on each of the entries on this list to further explain why I think the series and the theme songs included as a combined package have attained "iconic" status when it comes to the scene of "Anime Songs" in contrast to the "tie-up songs". I will also give a score related on how deeply intertwined I see the series and the performance related to the theme songs as a part of the experience as a whole. The series are ordered based on that score.

The term "iconic" in this list is defined by the popularity and how deeply established the meaning and the lyrical elements of the performance are in addition of them being intertwined with the series as a whole experience.

This list does not include iconic "tie-up songs" or other songs that by their lyrics or meaning do not establish a significant connection to the series, characters or the story.

More info about "Anime Songs" and "tie-up songs" and how they affect the performance from the perspective of the singer in this interview: https://www.cinra.net/article/interview-201509-horiemitsuko
