Synopsis

Zenigata arrives on the ship "Machine Gun Kelly", a casino on the water owned by the mafia, because Lupin plans on stealing the casino's money. Lupin and his gang manages to break into the ship's vault but was unable to escape with the money due to Zenigata's shooting. However, there was another purpose the ship had, one that Lupin was aware of; to search for a sunken ship filled with gold. Lupin managed to steal this data while he was on the ship, however, now they have to contend with Zenigata, the mafia, and a secret organization whose base is under Alcatraz, as they attempt to uncover the secret behind the organization and the sunken treasure.

This is definitely one of the better Lupin specials. I feel like when trying to convince a friend or fellow anime fan to watch Lupin you really have to pick and choose from the specials/movies to really draw them in. This one is great for people who are newish to the franchise. The (non-main) characters are less exaggerated and it even takes place in America.

STORY: You have to watch it really closely right off the bat, which is great. Not for plot purposes, but to catch the gang in disguise. I loved that about this special, that for the most part the gang has ...

The story takes place in America and has connections to American history. One of of our most infamous events is being put into the plot in this one, the JFK assassination. The art and sound quality are stanard for when it was made. The characters are their usual selves, which is always fun! It had a good bit of comedy around some very serious situations, and watching Lupin outsmart people and work with Zenigata always makes me laugh!

The story was average, and not memorable. The reason Lupin was stealing the treasure was stupid, too. But, it was fun while I was watching it.

I would recommend ...

Mixed Feelings
With a franchise as old as Lupin III some lows are expected. Alcatraz Connection isn't a low, exactly, but the comparison with other installments is inevitable.

With such a wacky track record, the worst thing a Lupin III installment can be is boring. Alcatraz Connection isn't boring. It's fun and wacky in it's own way. The cartoonish features are to the max in the special and I think that's quite nice.

Lupin and Jigen are fine and their usual selfs. Zenigata is maybe the best thing in the special, he's sharp and funny. Unfortunately the shorter end of the stick ended up with Goemon and ...
