These anime all portray historically detailed and accurate tales set during or relating to the Second World War. While some are purely fictional, others are autobiographical in nature. In addition, all of these films give great insight into the Japanese perspective on the war and the bombings which have ever since traumatized the nation.

Welcome to my Obscurity series, which I hope will help you delve deeper into the depths of anime, particularly the classics.

The criteria here is simple: Anime released in 2001 or earlier, with under 35,000 MAL Members, and which I've rated a 7 or higher.

I'm also not including anything that I've already included on my Good Stuff list: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/9517

It is perhaps worth noting that I rate things entirely on gut feeling. It's just, "I like that, that was good, it gets a 7.", that's the whole process. I can also find enjoyment in just about anything and there's very little that bothers me.

Japan has waged countless wars within its territories and beyond her shores for thousands of years now, and in anime we can see some of the perspectives, interpretations and depictions the Japanese people have developed with regards to this topic.

In this stack list I have gathered what I consider to be the essential anime with the theme of war, whether they show it from the perspective of the soldiers who fight them or from the experience of the bystander civilians who have to endure its effects on society and the environment. War is a theme that comes up, even tangentially, in most of everything, so I can't really make a list of every good anime that has some reference to war in it, so here I tried to put shows that either have a direct focus on war as a core theme, or shows whose main focus isn't war and only have war related elements in certain limited sections, but still do provide an interesting and valuable perspective on it when the theme of war eventually comes up.

I don't necessarily agree with all of these shows' views on war (I actively disagree with some), nor do I believe every show here is good. I just think that all of these could offer interesting insight on the different perspectives about war that come up in Japanese animation. You decide which view of war you agree with the most or find most emotionally genuine and politically nuanced.

Locomotion was a subscription television channel that broadcast various genres of adult animation 24 hours a day.

Its administrative headquarters and its broadcast center were located in Miami (United States) and, since mid-2003, the broadcast center was moved to Buenos Aires (Argentina).

What stood out the most from the programming was the massive inclusion of uncensored anime, several of these broadcast in the original language with subtitles for the first time in Latin America.

The channel was a space for the counterculture and the alternative young adult public of the time.

ADV Films, the former incarnation of Sentai Filmworks, produced most of their English dubs in Houston, Texas. However, from the late 1990s until 2005, ADV also employed a secondary studio in Austin, Texas, known as Monster Island.

Monster Island could be considered ADV's "2nd-string" studio, as many (though not all) shows they dubbed were lesser-known and perhaps lesser quality. Shipping them to MI may have been a cost-cutting move, as many of the dubs are marred by fast-and-loose scriptwriting, questionable name pronunciations, and a general sense of roughness and inexperience.
Still, a lot of them had their own sort of charm, and some are well-regarded. You can find some comments about the dubs from me on some individual entries. Some may be approaching "lost media" status, or are not commonly available online by legal or illegal means.

So if you've encountered an ADV dub from the early 2000s and wondered why the cast was full of names you hadn't heard of, or why it felt different from the average ADV dub, chances are it was a Monster Island show.

*Note: some related/sequel titles dubbed by MI are noted only in the comments, in order to stay under the 50-item limit.

Anime films with fewer than 50,000 members.

Stack rules:
- Must have fewer than 50,000 members as of writing this (04/November/2023). Should an included entry surpass that in the future, however, it will not be removed.
- For this list, a “film” counts as something with a runtime longer than 25 minutes
- Explicit genres (ecchi, hentai, erotica) have been excluded
- Any entries marked with a star (☆) are my personal recommendations! :)
