Zero no Tsukaima

Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière is a self-absorbed mage in a world of wands, cloaks, and royalty. Although she studies at Tristain Academy, a prestigious school for magicians, she has a major problem: Louise is unable to cast magic properly, earning her the nickname of "Louise the Zero" from her classmates.

When the first year students are required to perform a summoning ritual, Louise's summoning results in a catastrophic explosion! Everyone deems this to be yet another failure, but when the smoke clears, a boy named Saito Hiraga appears. Now Louise's familiar, Saito is treated as a slave, forced to clean her clothes and eat off the ground. But when an unfamiliar brand is found etched on Saito's hand from the summoning ritual, it is believed to be the mark of a powerful familiar named Gandalfr.

Wild, adventurous, and explosive, Zero no Tsukaima follows Saito as he comes to terms with his new life and as Louise proves that there is more to her than her nickname suggests.

Upon entering the first minutes, a distinct Harry Potter vibe immediately envelops the scene, with some characters resembling the wizardly world, complete with cloaks. The narrative unfolds within the nobility class, interspersed with peasants, and many characters exude a noble-like demeanor, setting the tone for what to expect. The story incorporates elements from the real world into this fantasy realm, adding a mysterious touch to their origins and the overarching narrative. While the opening somewhat gives away key plot points, it was, to some extent, anticipated.

The humor is well-crafted, often relying on the tsundere aspect. If this personality type doesn't appeal to you, the comedic ... elements might not resonate as strongly. Despite occasional perverted undertones, it maintains modesty, with clothing remaining intact in all but a couple of instances. While more magic would be appreciated, the adventure in the story compensates for its absence.

Being a multi-season anime, there isn't a definitive conclusion, but a light ending provides a satisfactory closure that holds its ground, allowing us to stop at one season if desired.

The character tags provide a clear indication of their personalities, featuring a main girl with a tsundere disposition and each student having mastery over a servant in some capacity, particularly evident in the main duo. Various character archetypes, such as the lustful pervert, the quiet bookworm, and the womanizer, complement their roles, all within the context of the nobility class. While the noble personalities may not align with contemporary standards, the enjoyable nature compensates for it.

Given its age, the art style reflects its era, contributing to the overall thematic atmosphere. Personally, the aged aesthetic adds to the charm of the series.

In conclusion, the appeal of the nobility and peasant concept, coupled with an adventurous and humorous storyline, made it enjoyable. The presence of a tsundere character, especially one with a noble background, added depth to the personality. The only drawback was the opening giving away certain plot developments.

Mixed Feelings

Zero no tsukaima is one of those few animes that I would recommend to some people despite the low rating I gave it. It has a an interesting world, many likeable characters, a decently written main character, well-thought abilities, etc...

The anime makes it clear from the first moment that there will be a love story between the two main characters: Louise and Saito, and while Louise is abusive and cold she's so innocent that you root for her somewhat, even more when even she doesn't know why she acts the way she does and regrets the flaws she shows towards people she cares for. ... Saito on the other hand is lecherous but cares for, protects Louise and is loyal, he has a lot of chances to take advantage of her innocence like some other characters try to do, but he seems to respect her.

The story has many great things to develop but it's poorly written so it doesn't polish any of the great concepts it presents, and it often goes in a vulgar tangent like "a thief has a mark on her chest, Saito you need to cause a ruckus looking at every girl's chest". We also get a lot of unnaturally bouncing chests, underage girls in very revealing underwear, and an exhausting amount of sexual innuendos.

This might be the single handedly worst anime I have ever watched in my life. Nothing more needs to be said except don't watch it. I've watched ex-arm, mars of destruction, and tesla note and this one takes the cake. I have a pretty high tolerance for garbage anime but this one makes me want to throw up. Main female character is probably the worst human being you'll ever find in anime and I watched redo of healer. The art is mid, the characters were ALL obnoxious and stupid. Generic, predictable, trash story writing. Frog main character gets carried by a bunch of OP girls ... that somehow join his harem. I don't think anyone would enjoy this series.
