Mother: Saigo no Shoujo Eve

This anime is unique in that although on the surface its supremely average it carries a deeper underlying theme about human society and the destruction that prevails as a consequence of man's desire for technological advancement.For a young girl called Eve the sanctuary of E.Y.E.S is all that she has ever known.Daily telepathic training with the other girls of the sanctuary is the only thought that has ever filled her mind as she and all her friends have no memory of their past or any existence beyond the sanctuary.

Her life will change forever as she meets a young man,a rebel from the outskirt's ... of the polluted city of mars who will reveal to her the lie that she's been living and her role in what may be the only way to safe mars and human existence.

Character -wise this anime is sorely lacking as all the characters are pretty bland.the animation is pretty descent but the music forgettable.

Overall an anime to watch just for the sake of saying that you saw it.

E.Y.E.S. of Mars has an interesting premise that is unfortunately bogged down by very heavy-handed, very un-nuanced, and often hypocritical environmentalist and anti-technology themes. The only thing that really saves it for me is the sheer power of nostalgia.

At first, you'd assume this takes place in the distant future, but nope! It's actually the distant past, and the origin story for modern humanity that bears more than a little resemblance to Scientology. The people of Mars are originally from the planet that used to exist where the asteroid belt is today, which is a pretty interesting take I don't think I've seen done before. They ... destroyed their home planet and fled to Mars, living in a dome city that they're also slowly destroying. Not a bad premise if done correctly.

Unfortunately, there is very little nuance to the issues of environmentalism and technology. The message is very bluntly "technology bad, nature good." There's outright talk of future generations living *without* technology.

The major problem with this is that Mars is quite literally uninhabitable without their little dome city. The movie makes a point to show that the massive forest under the city is completely propped up artificially, complete with air vents and everything. They *can't* live without technology, the point of no return was reached a long time ago.

I can't really talk about E.Y.E.S. of Mars without talking about the ending. It's a blatant deus-ex-machina, with everyone dying in an attempt to leave for Earth and their spirits going to Earth instead to start humanity. Like I said, a lot of similarities to Scientology. The ending narration says they created the civilization of Atlantis, but that didn't exactly work out either, did it?

The personal enjoyment I get out of this movie is the nostalgia factor. It's extremely 90's in a weirdly American way - nothing about this feels particularly Japanese. The heavy-handed environmentalism and animation style all feel very quintessentially 90's American. If you like that sort of thing or even enjoy it in an ironic fashion, go ahead and give it a try.

Sometimes you deep dive into forgotten anime and stumble upon things no human being should ever watch.

I found this movie while looking over infamous director Iku Suzuki (the mastermind behind Dark Cat, a contender for worst anime ever) and his career. I was hoping to find something entertaining, but unfortunately this movie is mostly a bunch of boring nothing. The characters are flat as boards, the the art is bland and dull (as is the music), and the plot is vacant of any creativity for most of the movie.

The only reason I'm not giving this a 1 is that around 40 or so minutes in, ... the movie finally gets to its' point. It's still pretty generic heavy-handed sci-fi environmentalism, but I at least get the sense that someone wanted to tell this message -- it tried for something. It mildly caught my interest when I was completely checked out of this film, and it's also a pretty wild ending from what was a whole lot of nothing beforehand, so I'll give it credit for that.

I still would recommend nobody watches this movie. It's not interesting otherwise and not worth any payoffs in the slightest -- just a slow, plodding, creatively bankrupt experience created for the sake of making a movie.

If you're looking for something good, this isn't for you. Go watch Nausicaa, it's basically this movie's messaging but in an actually interesting package that people actually wanted to make.

If you're looking for something bad, this isn't for you either. It's certainly bad, but only in the way that it's tediously boring and absent of anything good. Go watch Skelter Heaven, Garzey's Wing, Dark Cat, Cipher, Gibiate, EX-ARM, Master of Martial Hearts or any of the many, many other mind-breaking failures of animation and storytelling found on this website.
