i really enjoy the nature theme of these movies. they all have engaging stories and dynamic characters. these movies great sub-genre all their own.

Both films are surreal and abstract, both include journey on a physical level, which helps the characters to realize what they really are, and also the pacing in the two movies is difficult to follow up at a time.

A Tree of Palme just screams Kaiba in both its art direction and themes... Though I would argue Kaiba is more successful in delivering on those themes, A Tree of Palme is a great watch if you're into the art of the series. It's truly lovely stuff, and it's very interesting to watch a piece of media with such a similar style to Kaiba being animated with a movie budget. It's a mixed experience, but I'd say it's well worth a watch! :-)

Both have fantasy settings that they use to explore very dark themes, and a somber tone. They also have an aesthetic I would term as 'dark Ghibli', having much in common with their films from the late 90s and early 2000s. Lala-Ru and Popo are also very similar characters. However, the protagonist of Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku? is much more relatable and heroic.

this might seem as a stretch to some but I feel that both have a ery solid and truthful meaning at their "roots" if you must. the only thing that I see that is really different is the roles that the main characters in each play in the plot.

Very similar animation and character design. Also, the main female character of "Fantastic Children" appears to be a cameo of "A tree of Palms" main female protagonist.

The most striking similarity of Metropolis and A Tree of Palm is that they both feature characters who are not human but similar. They are "Pinocchio" type stories with a futuristic backdrop. Plus, the main characters are quite young, the plot containing tragedy and a touch of romance in both movies.

The goal is to find a way for Earth to continue living but can it be done without sacrifice?
