Cello Hiki no Gauche (1982)

The Oofuji Noburou Award (大藤信郎賞) is an animation award given at the Mainichi Film Awards. It is named after Japanese animator Noburou Oofuji.

Following the death of Noburou Oofuji in 1961, Mainichi established a new award in his honor to recognize animation excellence. A specialist in silhouette animation, Oofuji was one of the earliest Japanese animators to gain international recognition.

With the growth of the animation industry in Japan, the award in the 1980s came to be dominated by big budget studio productions, over the work of the independent animators for whose efforts it was originally established. To address this concern, the Animation Grand Award was established to reward large scale cinematic animation, enabling the Oofuji award to focus on shorter pieces again.

Factors considered include story beats and character designs that are often seen in Ghibli works as well as works by Ghibli staff completed for other studios.

Featuring little to no dialogue and/or characters and the experience is carried by the music and/or visual atmosphere.

Anime that focuses on the importance of the natural world on its own terms and/or the ramifications of negligent human interactions with the world.

Now let me preface, the title is a bit reductionist, we shouldn't feel obligated to label what something is or isn't. Rather, the media below at the very least has an idea in it that is tangental to eco-politics whereas other works or more directly critiquing a specific topic (say wars effect on the environment).

Either way all of these works have something in them that might add to your perspective of the subject.

Anime Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki had a major role working on prior to Studio Ghibli's foundation in 1985. Collected in chronological order.

I'm not knowledgable about all of these, as the list wasn't originally made by me, so some entries are missing detailed descriptions. Sorry about that.

Just some classic physical cels and hard work.

Try to get the blu-ray or 4K version of these works (if they exist and after you've checked them to see if you like them) because the high-resolution scans are clean and really help bring out the texture and color of these works. And yes, it looks better on physical media than streaming always.

Ordered somewhat by aesthetic preference.
