Synopsis

Nichijou primarily focuses on the daily antics of a trio of childhood friends—high school girls Mio Naganohara, Yuuko Aioi and Mai Minakami—whose stories soon intertwine with the young genius Hakase Shinonome, her robot caretaker Nano, and their talking cat Sakamoto. With every passing day, the lives of these six, as well as of the many people around them, experience both the calms of normal life and the insanity of the absurd. Walking to school, being bitten by a talking crow, spending time with friends, and watching the principal suplex a deer: they are all in a day's work in the extraordinary everyday lives of those in Nichijou.

Background

Bandai Entertainment had licensed Nichijou, but on January 2, 2012, it was announced they were leaving the North American anime market with all unreleased titles including Nichijou being cancelled. The series would remain unlicensed until November 4, 2016 when Funimation Entertainment acquired the series, and released it sub-only in a complete Blu-ray & DVD combo pack on February 7, 2017. They also did a Blu-ray & Digital combo pack with a brand new English dub, which was released on July 23, 2019.

This show is a masterclass in animation as a form of comedy in its solitary medium. Over-exaggeration of inward emotions being reflected in the bombastic animation styleization is phenomenal. This show lends itself quite well to the slice-of-life genre and remains one of the key outliers in key animation styles for the genre.
Nichijou reflects the basics of passionate life, through various clips on youtube, to rampant online gifs, there is no way to avoid spoilers with this anime; moreover I think not only should you watch this in spite of the spoilers to certain scenes, but watch this because the experience will be even funnier ...

Mixed Feelings
So my experience with Nichijou was pretty lukewarm in general, so here's to a lukewarm review. In as few words as possible, I would describe it as "a mediocre comedy with incredibly high production value and some golden moments interspersed between otherwise tryhard and sometimes tedious jokes".

As this is a comedy series, the jokes and comedic timing and such are criteria by which to judge its quality. Well, on that front the thing kinda flops for me, at least. Most of the scenes are far too drawn out and rarely feature a satisfying punchline, but you mileage may vary. Nichijou does try an interesting approach ...

FunnyFunny
I had high expectations considering I love the genre and I heard this was highly regarded. Unfortunately this steaming pile of excrement is so utterly devoid of humor or competent writing for that matter, it makes me question people’s sanity. I can count the number of times I genuinely laughed at gags on one hand. I do like randomness humor but this was so random combined with the fact that the basic writing was so poor, it makes for one of the most painful watches I’ve ever had. And it’s a shame because somewhere in here is 12 very competent episodes if they were allowed ...
